Albany, NY – Senator Stephen T. Chan, representing New York State Senate District 17 in South Brooklyn, voiced strong opposition to the congestion pricing initiative that has significantly impacted his constituents. In a recent address, Senator Chan highlighted the daily struggles faced by residents who rely on access to Manhattan for work, healthcare, and essential services.
Our community is suffering due to this congestion pricing scheme
Senator Chan further said, “Many of my constituents have close ties to Manhattan, yet they are being forced to pay exorbitant fees just to commute for work or seek medical care. This initiative is turning Manhattan into a playground for the wealthy while everyday New Yorkers struggle.”
Senator Chan noted a decline in business in areas like Chinatown and expressed concern over the burdens placed on first responders, nurses, doctors, and teachers who are essential to the community. “We need our healthcare workers and educators on the front lines, not stuck in traffic or unable to reach their workplaces due to financial barriers,” he stated.
The Senator criticized the state’s approach to addressing fare evasion on public transit and raised questions about the feasibility of raising funds for the MTA while simultaneously claiming that traffic is down in Manhattan. “You can’t expect to raise a billion dollars from congestion pricing if traffic is significantly reduced. This plan is flawed and disproportionately affects those who can least afford it.”
In light of these concerns, Senator Chan is calling for the immediate repeal of congestion pricing and is seeking alternative solutions that do not penalize hardworking New Yorkers.
“Now is the time to listen to our community and act to stop congestion pricing and find a fairer approach that supports all New Yorkers,” Chan concluded.
