Sen. Gounardes Speaks on SXSW Panel About Protecting Young People on Social Media
From TikTok to YouTube, young people spend more time on the internet than ever before — and these apps know it. They target advertising to children, collect their data, and utilize endless scroll techniques to keep kids plugged in. There are legislative pathways to change that, including New York’s Child Data Privacy & Protection Act, and California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code Act.
This 2024 SXSW panel, "Stopping the Scroll: Legislating an Age-Appropriate Internet," brought together a diverse range of perspectives to discuss these pathways and other solutions, this session offering a thoughtful approach to the issue of age-appropriate design in social media today.
Panelists included State Senator Andrew Gounardes, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and DataBrade's Joe Toscano. The panel was moderated by Zephyr Teachout.
