STOP Liberty Utilities’ planned water rate hike!

More than 100,000 customers across Nassau County’s South Shore communities may face a steep increase in their private water bills if Liberty Utilities’ planned rate hike is approved.  Liberty Utilities is asking the New York State Public Service Commission for a 34.5% rate hike.  People paying for private water through Liberty Utilities already pay up to 1,300% more for water than Town of Hempstead Water Department customers.  Far too many of us are paying exorbitant prices for substandard quality and poor service provided to us by this private water company.

Important to note are my ongoing efforts to make the transition to public water. Years ago, the South Nassau Water Authority was created by the State for the very purpose of investigating and negotiating the cost of a potential public takeover of Liberty Water but was provided no funding by the State to do that work. While the equivalent authority on the north shore receives $1 million annually - ours receives nothing. As a result, nothing has happened. That is why Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick and I introduced legislation (S.5173) to force the State to fund the South Nassau Water Authority so it can do its work.
