Staten Island forum will focus on elder abuse
Published: Thursday, April 05, 2012, 1:22 PM by Grace Zhang
Elder abuse will be the focus of the Staten Island Inter-Agency Council's (SIIAC) educational forum April 19 for senior citizens and senior service providers.
One out of every 14 Americans over 60 years-old may undergo from some sort of abuse, according to statistics provided by the agency. These abuses are often overlooked and have been appropriately dubbed as the "invisible crime." It usually involves an abuser who has been involved in a long-term trusting relationship with the victim.
To prevent such cases from happening, the staff of Community Agency for Senior Citizens (CASC) will be helping attendees to identify and understand different types of abuse.
The presentation will take place on Thursday, April 19 at New Dorp Moravian Church, starting at 9:30 a.m. For more information contact Carol Dunn, executive director of SIIAC at (718) 667-3162.
