BROOKFIELD LANDFILL PROGRESS REPORT & PUBLIC MEETING - Monday, June 18th, 7 p.m.

Dear Neighbor:

For decades, our community has been fighting to properly close and cap the contaminated Brookfield Landfill - the former municipal solid waste disposal site, where toxic materials were illegally dumped in the 1970s.  I am proud to have worked with representatives from across our Borough, City and State to secure over $260 million in funding to remediate this former landfill and transform it into a safe and beautiful 21^st Century parkland for Staten Islanders to enjoy.

After a long fought battle, we are finally closing in on the end result. In 2010, we broke ground on the $266 million project that will cover the 132-acre solid waste disposal portion of the site with 2 million tons of soil and incorporate it with the remaining acres of undisturbed land, forest, wetlands and streams. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2015 with tree and shrub plantings installed by 2017.

Remediation is moving along as scheduled, but we must ensure that Brookfield is designed to meet the needs of our community. Please come to our next Brookfield Citizens Advisory Committee Public Meeting to discuss your thoughts on how this 170 acre park should look when it opens.
