Parent Conference - Help in keeping the bullies at bay

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Parents interested in learning how to keep their children safe from bullies and school violence are invited to a parent conference on Oct. 23.

The free event, sponsored by the United Federation of Teachers, will feature guests who will offer tips and tools to help students learn in a safe environment.

This is the first time the UFT is holding a parent conference on Staten Island, officials said. Typically, conferences are held once a year in Manhattan; however, the UFT decided this year to have one conference in each borough.

The speakers at the Staten Island conference, which will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield, include: George Anthony, an award-winning educator and conflict resolution specialist who works as the director of the Institute for International Leadership, Nonviolence and Service; Guy Tardanico, an assistant district attorney for the Richmond County district attorney's office, specializing in the Criminal Court bureau; Bernadette Davenport, the domestic violence coordinator for the district atorney's office, and Jeanette Taveras, the administrative sergeant in the Gangs Intervention Unit of the city Department of Education.

The event includes breakfast and lunch, along with raffles and a vendor fair.
