Domestic Violence Awareness Month Info Session

In commemoration of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. is hosting an informational event to educate the community, encourage prevention, and provide support and resources to survivors. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Party Affairs, located at 85-05 Pitkin Avenue, Ozone Park, NY 11417.

"Domestic violence is a universal issue that affects individuals and families in every corner of our community," Addabbo said. "By coming together this month, we can break the silence, provide essential resources, and show survivors that they are not alone. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone."

This event is conducted with support from the Ozone Tudor Civic Association. It will feature guest speakers from Safe Horizon and the NYPD Domestic Violence Unit who will give attendees an opportunity to engage in discussions and interactive exercises regarding prevention and support strategies. Community members are encouraged to attend and participate in this critical conversation.

Domestic Violence, also known as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), affects millions of people in the United States each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 

IPV can result in injuries and even death, the CDC says. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are abused by an intimate partner in the United States, according to St. Jude House. For one year this equates to more than 10 million women and men.  Only about 1 out of 5 IPV victims with physical injuries seeks professional medical treatment, according to the Emory University School of Medicine. In 2021, 34% of female murder victims were killed by an intimate partner, compared to 6% of male murder victims, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Attending this event is crucial for fostering a compassionate and informed community. Participants will gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by survivors of domestic violence and learn about the resources available to help them. This is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those affected, raise awareness, and contribute to breaking the cycle of violence.
