Sen. Harckham Holds Food Drive in Peekskill on May 16

Too many of our friends and neighbors continue to be food insecure because of the economic devastation caused by the new coronavirus pandemic.

To help alleviate this problem, New York State Senator Pete Harckham will be holding a food drive from 12 p.m. (noon) to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 in the parking lot at Peekskill High School, 1072 Elm St., Peekskill, NY.

Along with members of his staff and a group of volunteers, Harckham will be collecting food that will be donated to Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill (CHHOP) / Fred’s Pantry, which helps feed some of the neediest members of the community, including many of seniors.

Please note: This will be a “Drive Through, Drop Off” event. No food will be distributed; it will only be collected.

If you are interested in donating food, the items most needed include:

Canned fruits and vegetables (low sugar and low sodium preferred)
Canned soups
Peanut butter and jelly
Dried beans; pasta
Canned tuna, sardines, different meat / protein
Rice and pasta
Canned tomatoes
Cooking oil (vegetable, olive or canola)
Mayonnaise
Coffee and tea (not Keurig)

Donations of facial tissues, shampoo, toothbrushes, tooth paste, dental floss and soap are appreciated as well.

Those who make a donation will receive a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer.
