About the NYC DEP Rain Barrel Program
DEP’s Rain Barrel Giveaway Program is part of New York City’s Green Infrastructure Plan that aims to capture stormwater before it can ever enter the sewer system and thereby reduce combined sewer overflows into local waterways.
As a rapidly growing city we must continually find ways to be eco-friendly and protect our environment . Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. The 60-gallon rain barrels are easy to install and connect directly to a downspout to capture storm water from your roof . The water collected in the rain barrel can then be used to water lawns and gardens, or for other outdoor chores.
The project started with a pilot program in Queens in 2008 and is expanding yearly because of its success. Together we can support our environment by promoting rain water harvesting, water conservation and reducing sewer overflow into our local waterways.
Homeowners please join the fight in keeping our city healthy by registering for your free rain barrel today. For More Information or to register please contact the District Office
