ORTIZ -- read once and referred to the Committee on Health AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to the spina bifida education and outreach program THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 207 of the public health law is amended by adding a new paragraph (i) to read as follows: (I) SPINA BIFIDA, A PERMANENTLY DISABLING BIRTH DEFECT OCCURRING AT THE END OF THE FIRST MONTH OF PREGNANCY WHICH INVOLVES THE INCOMPLETE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPINAL CORD OR ITS COVERINGS, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ENCOURAGING ALL WOMEN IN THEIR CHILD-BEARING YEARS TO INCREASE THEIR FOLIC ACID INTAKE IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF SPINA BIFIDA. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD09367-01-3
