BILL NUMBER: S2895 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to custom plates for veterans PURPOSE : To waive all initial fees for any kid of veterans custom plates including vanity plates SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section 1 amends the Vehicle and Traffic Law by adding a new section providing that all initial fees for existing plate designs in the military and veterans' series of custom plates are waived in the case of an application by any veteran of service in the armed forces of the United States. The waiver applies to fees for such custom plates without vanity lettering. Section 2 is the effective date. EXISTING LAW : Article 14 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law relates to the registration of motor vehicles. RITCHIE -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to custom plates for veterans THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding a new section 404-y to read as follows: § 404-Y. CUSTOM PLATES FOR VETERANS, WAIVER OF FEE. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW TO THE CONTRARY, ALL INITIAL FEES FOR EXIST- ING PLATE DESIGNS IN THE MILITARY AND VETERANS SERIES OF CUSTOM PLATES ARE HEREBY WAIVED IN THE CASE OF AN APPLICATION THEREFOR BY ANY VETERAN OF SERVICE IN THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES. THIS WAIVER APPLIES TO FEES FOR SUCH CUSTOM PLATES WITHOUT VANITY LETTERING. § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of May next succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law.
