TITLE OF BILL:

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to parking near
a stop sign

 
PURPOSE:

To allow vehicles to park within 30ft of a stop sign unless posted
otherwise.

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1. Subparagraph c of paragraph 2 of subdivision (a) of section
1202 of the vehicle and traffic law, as amended by chapter 679 of the
laws of 1970, is amended to read as follows:

c. Within thirty feet upon approach to any flashing signal, stop or
yield sign or traffic control signal located at the side of the roadway,
unless a different distance is indicated by official signs, markings or

parking meters. The commissioner shall ensure that notification of the
distance requirement established by this section is conspicuously posted
beneath any stop sign posted on a state high way;

§ 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after
it shall have become law. Effective immediately, the commissioner of
motor vehicles may begin the installation of any signs required as a
result of this act

 
JUSTIFICATION:

The current New York State's vehicle and traffic law prohibits parking
within thirty feet of a stop or yield sign or traffic control signal.
This legislation will allow vehicles to park within 3Oft of a stop sign
without blocking a driveway or a crosswalk and ensure that the required
distance established by the law will be posted on any stop sign to fore-
warn motorists upon approaching a stop sign.

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after it
shall have become law. Effective immediately, the commissioner of motor
vehicles may begin the installation of any signs required as a result of
this act.

   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. Subparagraph c of paragraph 2 of subdivision (a) of section
 1202  of  the  vehicle and traffic law, as amended by chapter 679 of the
 laws of 1970, is amended to read as follows:
   c. Within thirty feet upon the approach to any flashing  signal,  stop
 or yield sign or traffic-control signal located at the side of the road-
 way,  unless  a different distance is indicated by official signs, mark-
