Louis S. Nigrello
Louis S. Nigrello honorably served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a radioman first class and served with great distinction on the USS LSM 144 in the Pacific Theater, and was involved in significant action protecting the United States Fleet during World War II; and
His ship was responsible for the delivery of tanks and United States Marines Corps Troops to the beaches during assaults on enemy positions, and these actions included attacks in the Lyngan Gulf of the Philippines and the island of Okinawa, and for his action during these difficult and dangerous assaults, Louis S. Nigrello was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star, and the World War Victory Medal; and
Following his military service, Louis S. Nigrello was the Metro District Manager for the Atlantic & Pacific supermarkets for forty years and then became a Senior Account Manager for Haagen Dazs Ice Cream for the following twenty years, until his retirement in 2006; and
In his continuing service to our community, Louis S. Nigrello has been a trustee for the Enrico Fermi Scholarship Foundation for over thirty-five years and he remains an active member of the American Legion Gilbert Rauh Post, in addition to his service as a Primary Committee Member of the City of Yonkers Veterans Appreciation Day Committee, and he served the citizenry of Yonkers as a Mayoral Appointee to the Honor Roll Committee overseeing the restoration of the Yonkers 1920’s Era Veterans Memorial, and in acknowledgement of his continued service to our community, Louis S. Nigrello was selected to serve as the 2007 Grand Marshal of The Annual Columbus Day Parade and as the 2008 Grand Marshal of the City of Yonkers Memorial Day Parade; and
Louis S. Nigrello serves on the City of Yonkers Parking Authority Board and has been an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish for forty years, where he has been a committed supporter of all of the parish fundraising efforts, and he is an active member of the disabled American Veterans, The World War II Memorial Fund and the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund; and
Louis S. Nigrello has been married to Frances Nigrello for sixty-two years, and they are the proud parents of three children and seven beautiful grandchildren, and Louis S. Nigrello will be honored for his considerable service to our nation and our community at the City of Yonkers Veterans Appreciation Day Celebration; now, therefore be it
That I, State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, recognize the significant contributions and accomplishments of Louis S. Nigrello and join with the residents of the 35th District and all of New York State to recognize Louis S. Nigrello for his contributions to our state and to the United States of America; and be it further
That I, State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, do hereby join with the residents of New York State and proclaim this day, Saturday, June 20, 2009 as Louis Nigrello day throughout New York State’s 35th Senate District in celebration of his many contributions to our community and in defense of our freedom.
