The New York State Department of Civil Service will be holding a Correction Officer exam on October 16, 2010.
Correction Officers are responsible for the custody and security, as well as the safety and well-being, of criminal offenders in the State Correctional Facilities and Correctional Camps. Starting salary for accepted correction officer trainees is $36,420 per year. After successful completion of the one-year traineeship, the salary increases to $43,867 per year. In addition to the base salary, appointees will receive 16 college credits, a comprehensive health insurance program, retirement benefits, and pre-shift briefing and expanded duty pay which amount to $3,344 annually.
Individuals interested in taking the competitive exam must complete an application and forward it along with a non-refundable $35 application fee to the New York State Department of Civil Service. Applications for the test and additional information are available online at:

Completed applications to take the exam must be postmarked no later than September 13, 2010.
There are no minimum requirements for taking this written examination. However, at the time of appointment as a Correction Officer, candidates must be at least 21 years old, be a New York State resident, and possess at least a high school diploma or GED. Appointees must also have passed medical and psychological screenings, as well as a background investigation.
