New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) joined with school administrators, faculty, parents, students and alumni of St. Mel School in Flushing to commemorate their landmark 50th Anniversary on Saturday September 18, 2010. The anniversary was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony and the opening of a time capsule. St. Mel Church Pastor Father Christopher J. Turczany, Sister Angela Gannon, Laura Conte and Senator Frank Padavan prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the second fifty years of St. Mel School.
