Al Etkin is known throughout Sullivan County as a tireless advocate for veterans and their dependents. As the Director of the Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency from 1994 to 2000, Mr. Etkin has helped improve the lives of thousands of veterans by providing them with entitlement information and assistance in matters relating to veterans law. It is through these good works that Mr. Etkin, a decorated veteran of the United States Army, feels that he made his greatest accomplishment to society.
Mr. Etkin further served his fellow veterans as a past District Commander of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Jewish War Veterans, and as a member of Congressman Gilman’s Veterans Advisory Committee and the Castle Point Veterans Advisory Committee. He has been honored by the American Legion Department of New York with an Award of Distinction for his leadership with Prisoner of War and Missing in Action programs.
Mr. Etkin is the recipient of the Army of Occupation, Good Conduct, and National Defense citations and the U.S. Army Service, American Defense Service, Overseas Service and Cold War Victory commemoratives.
In addition, Mr. Etkin has distinguished himself as a leader in the business community. Having spent 35 years in the radio broadcasting industry, Mr. Etkin is a past president of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Private Industry Council.
