Sen. Malcolm A. Smith's June Constituent of the Month - Leroy Gasden

SENATE PRESIDENT MALCOLM A. SMITH HONORS JAMAICA NAACP PRESIDENT AS CONSTITUENT OF THE MONTH

(St. Albans, NY)-  Senate President Malcolm A. Smith honored Leroy Gadsden, President of the Jamaica Branch of the NAACP as his June Constituent of the Month.

“The Jamaica NAACP has made tremendous strides under the leadership of Leroy Gadsden.  He has done great work in the community and I am confident that he will continue to do so,” said Senator. Smith.

Leroy Gadsden was elected President of the Jamaica Branch of the NAACP in the fall of 1998.

 He also serves as a life member of the organization. Prior to serving as president, Mr. Gadsden served as Chair of the Police Community Relations Committee and Legal Advisor to the organization.

Since his tenure as president, Mr. Gadsden has :

• Trained and organized 36 legal observers for the purpose of patrolling minority polling sites on Election Day with cameras to video  illegal practices or irregular activity.

·         Established voter registration and voter turnout coalitions with different religious denominations, public housing communities and community civic and non-profit organizations.

Leroy Gadsden is the recipient of more than twenty NAACP achievement awards including the NAACP Region II Highest Civil Rights Achievement Award in 2005. Earlier this year at the NAACP’s 100^th Anniversary Convention, he was awarded the coveted NAACP’s National Foot Soldiers In The Sands Award for his decades of civil rights advocacy.  In addition  to NAACP awards, Gadsden has received dozens of community service awards and recognition for his  community activism.  Gadsden also gives back to his community by speaking at numerous community and religious events as well as volunteering to speak at local schools on career day.
