An inspiring story

It’s been one year since the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Though the earthquake has largely faded from the headlines, Haiti continues to struggle to recover—and New Yorkers continue to step up to help.
One of the many hopeful stories that have come out of this tragedy is that of Darline Bertil, an extraordinary young woman who lost both her arms in the earthquake. After I learned of her story, I worked to bring Darline to New York and connected her with the Hospital for Special Surgery, who—with enormous generosity—provided her with two artificial arms, so she can recover from the earthquake and continue to pursue her dreams.
Darline’s inspiring story and the work that we did to bring her here has been featured in the Daily News here, and will be covered on CNN tomorrow morning at 8:50 a.m.
If you would like to mark the anniversary by contributing to Haiti's ongoing recovery, the State Senate has a page with opportunities to help out here.
