A long-time Brooklyn resident and animal advocate, Cynthia King is deeply involved with neighborhood and New York City activism. Mother of two B-Boys, Ms. King is a community advocate, serving on the advisory board of Windsor Terrace Alliance. She is a dedicated and compassionate animal activist, proudly supporting animal protection organizations including Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, Our Hen House and Farm Sanctuary.
Ms. King launched the CYNTHIA KING DANCE STUDIO (Brooklyn, NY) in 2002, offering inspired and passionate dance instruction for all ages. A professional dancer since 1978, Cynthia King has been teaching and choreographing adults and children since 1986. The studio actively supports The Greenwood Playground, PTAs of local schools (including PS 154, 130, 230, 10), and DanceNYC.
She has been credited by the New York Department of Education with developing “…one of the most comprehensive dance programs in the district.” In 2008, then City Councilmember Bill DeBlasio nominated Ms. King for the Neighborhood Achievement Award. He says of Ms. King, “…you make our community a better place.” In April 2011, she was honored for effective leadership and services to her community by the Committee for Effective Leadership (New York State Democratic Committee, 82nd A.D.)
In 2008, Ms. King was honored by the Flatbush Tompkins Congregational Church with an award for her support of their Concert Hall Restoration Project. She initiated fund-raising events, donated new curtains for the stage, and brought the concert hall to life with various dance performances over the past ten years.
Ms. King has combined her passion for dance and compassion for animals into the development of CYNTHIA KING VEGAN BALLET SLIPPERS. The shoes were recently used in actress Natalie Portman’s photo shoots for Vogue and Entertainment Weekly, supporting her Oscar award-winning role in Black Swan.
