Lehman College Ground Breaking

Gustavo Rivera

September 23, 2011

Senator Gustavo Rivera attended the groundbreaking for the new Lehman College Child Care Center on Tuesday September 20th. The new child care center will double the capacity of the current child care center, which will serve 140 children for all day and after school programs. In attendance were Congressman Eliot Engel, Lehman College president Ricardo R. Fernandez, Jose Magdaleno Vice President for Student Affairs at Lehman College, Allan H. Dobrin Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer for CUNY, and Iris Weinshall Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning, Construction and Management, CUNY.

“I applaud Lehman College’s commitment to ensuring that students not only have access to the best education, but that they have the tools to succeed,” said Senator Rivera. “Providing more students with convenient and quality child care not only gives these students the peace of mind needed to concentrate on their studies, but it also further highlights the commitment of Lehman College to ensuring that their students complete their degree and succeed academically and professionally.”

The new child care center will be constructed off site and then delivered and assembled on campus. By doing so the building will be ready for use in Spring 2012. The new facility will be located on the western side of the campus, along Goulden Avenue, between the College’s administration building (Shuster Hall) and one of its classroom/laboratory buildings (Davis Hall), in an area that is not currently being used. The architects for this building are Garrison architects, and along with the new Science building being constructed on Lehman's Campus, this new child care center will also be a sustainable building incorporating a natural ventilation system, and vertical gardens.
