Senator Robach Recognizes June as Young Workers' Safety Month

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing June 2011 as Young Workers' Safety
Month in the State of New York
WHEREAS, Employment is a valuable part of a young person's learning and
development; and
WHEREAS, This June, thousands of New York's young workers will
commence their summer jobs, joining the more than four million young
workers who are employed in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Young workers are more likely to be injured while working
than are adults, and nationwide approximately 150,000 young workers
suffer from work related injuries each year; and
WHEREAS, Thirty-seven young workers died from on-the-job injuries in
New York State between the years 2007 and 2009; and
WHEREAS, The rate of injuries suffered by young workers in New York
State increased in 2009; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Young Worker Safety and Health Project was
formed in an effort to minimize work related injuries and illnesses for
young workers; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Young Worker Safety and Health Project is
composed of representatives of: the New York State Department of Labor,
the New York State Department of Health, the New York State Education
Department, the New York State Workers' Compensation Board, New York
State United Teachers, the New York Committee for Occupational Safety
and Health, the New York State Assembly Subcommittee on Workplace Safe
ty, the Youth Construction Initiative Program and several other communi
ty based organizations representing young workers and teachers; and
WHEREAS, This year, the New York State Young Worker Safety and Health
Project is holding "Young Worker Safety Night" at four ballparks
throughout New York State: Falcon Park in Auburn, Dwyer Stadium in Bata
via, Russell E. Diethrick, Jr. Park in Jamestown, and Joseph Bruno
Stadium in Troy; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Young Worker Safety and Health Project is
introducing "Passport to Safety," an online training program which
teaches young workers about their rights on the job and how to stay safe
at work; now therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize June 2011 as Young Workers' Safety Month in the State of New
York and to urge all to take appropriate recognition of this occasion.
