Mastic Beach, N.Y. – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) attended the official kick-off of the "Can Tabs for Kids" program at the William Floyd Elementary School in Mastic Beach this past Friday, October 7, 2011. The program is a fundraising project to help in the fight against childhood cancer. Last year, the students of William Floyd Elementary collected over 1,000 tabs and were able to donate $1,506 to the Sunrise Fund of Stony Brook Hospital.
Each week, the students bring bags of can tabs (similar to the one pictured here) to Gershow Recycling where they are weighed and recycled. "Can Tabs for Kids" was the idea of Maria Marks, a William Floyd Elementary School student who was diagnosed with cancer at an early age.
