Statement From Senator Michael Gianaris Regarding The Proposal To Close Over 100 Senior Centers In New York City
For so many seniors these centers serve as a crucial lifeline to the outside world. While we are forced to cut costs during this difficult economic time, we must make the hard decisions in a way that minimizes the impact on the most vulnerable New Yorkers. Our seniors have done so much for us, the least we can do is make sure they have the ability to enjoy their golden years with respect and dignity.
Last week the city revealed the names of 105 senior citizen centers throughout the city that will close at month's end. 19 of these centers are located in Queens. 3 centers in Senator Gianaris’ district are on the cut list. They are Steinway Senior Center, Queensbrige-Riis Senior Center and Ravenswood Senior Center
The centers provide the senior community with a place to go, a meal, a friendly setting, entertainment and exercise.
