Recovering and Rebuilding from Hurricane Sandy

The recovery and rebuilding effort after Sandy continues, and there are many other resources available through the federal and state governments that can help homeowners, business owners and local governments rebuild better. Since the storm hit, Senator Stewart-Cousins has been working hard to make sure her constituents have everything they need to make a full and speedy recovery.

One of the hardest hit areas of Greenburgh was Bridge Street in Irvington, particularly the riverfront office complex known as Bridge Street Properties. Just days after the storm, Senator Stewart-Cousins received a call from the building managers at Bridge Street Properties. They informed her that Con Edison had not been able to visit their property to assess the damage and asked if she could expedite their request. The Senator brought it up to Con Edison executives on a conference call that afternoon, and the next day, the company sent a representative to assess the damage. Now almost seven weeks after the storm, many businesses are still not able to occupy their spaces at Bridge Street. The Senator partnered with Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Assemblyman Tom Abinanti and Irvington Mayor Brian Smith to organize a Disaster Recovery Forum for the businesses of Bridge Street. Representatives from FEMA, the Small Business Administration and the New York State Department of Financial Services were all on hand to answer questions about grant opportunities, insurance claims or other issues.
