For her steadfast support of the developmentally disabled, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins received the 2012 Distinguished Humanitarian Award from the Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics (IAHD) at their 55th Anniversary Dinner at Chelsea Piers in New York.
The Senator was one of four esteemed honorees at the event. Janine Rose, Lead Anchor and News Director of News 12 Westchester; Rita Cosby, award-winning journalist and author; and William Lopez Assistant Commissioner of New York City’s Bureau of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities were the evening’s other award recipients.
"I was truly honored to receive the Distinguished Humanitarian Award last Friday. For 55 years, IAHD has been a leader in providing critical services to the developmentally disabled in Westchester and beyond,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “Throughout my career in public service, I have endeavored to level the playing field and give voice to those often left unheard, and IAHD has been a key partner in making sure the needs of some of our most vulnerable populations are met.”
On the same weekend, Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke at the Grand Opening ceremony of the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center in Yonkers. The new medical facility specializes in providing care to developmentally disabled children. The Senator was instrumental in securing a $5 million State grant to help fund the new pediatric center.
