This year, New York State Senate Republicans aim to make New York the 25th state where "Stand Your Ground" Legislation passes and becomes law. We cannot sit idly by and allow this dangerous legislation to become law.
The "Stand Your Ground" law, which has been enacted in 24 states, allows those individuals who feel threatened to invoke the law and literally walk free with immunity. In far too many cases, "Stand Your Ground" has been cited in many questionable situations where it is obviously unwarranted as self defense, the most noted of which is the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed while walking home.
"Stand Your Ground" affords one the right to use force, including deadly force, as a means of self-defensewhen one feels that there is "reasonable" belief of a threat, without an obligation to retreat first. As a result, one can be found justified and immune from criminal or civil charges when using deadly force without having to prove that one's life were in jeopardy.
We simply cannot allow a "Stand Your Ground" legislation to become law in New York State. Sign our petition and send a message to the NYS Senate Republican Majority: No to "Stand Your Ground" in NYS. Please click here to sign the petition.
