Colleen Hassett-Mastine
Award: HONORING WOMEN IN NEW YORK
Year: 2012
Colleen Hassett-Mastine was a devoted staff member and friend, whose passion, generosity, leadership, and desire to help others, enriched the quality of life for so many individuals in the State of New York.
A lifelong resident of the Syracuse area, Ms. Hassett-Mastine worked for Mayor Tom Young as an administrative assistant from 1986-1994. She was also selected an active member of the Mayor’s sub-cabinet on Neighborhoods and Youth.
Ms. Hassett-Mastine joined the staff at Senator DeFrancisco’s district office in 1995. As Director of Constituent Services, she assisted hundreds of Central New York residents with some of their most pressing issues. Whether it was helping individuals get proper medical care, working with veterans, or advocating for certain youth programs and services, Ms. Hassett-Mastine gave her all without seeking reward. Constituents would even call and ask for her because they knew she would work tirelessly on their behalf. In addition, she enjoyed mentoring many of the staff members.
For nearly 30 years, Ms. Hassett-Mastine dedicated her life to public service. She also was an active volunteer within the community, lending her time and talents to St. Ann’s Parish and various youth organizations, such as the Butler School of Dance, Westvale Knights Pop Warner, and the Boys and Girls Club. She energetically served on various boards of directors, including Vera House, Elmcrest Children’s Center, and New Justice Conflict Resolution Services.
If Ms. Hassett-Mastine got wind that you were sick or in need of help, she would be at your side with homemade goodies, friendly advice and warm well wishes. You also could often find her rooting, whether it be on the sidelines or in the audience, for her grandchildren (Declan, Owen, Mairead, Rory, Kenna, and Braedan) at their various sporting events and school functions, beaming with pride and adoration. That spirit will live on forever.
Though she left this earth far too early, Ms. Hassett-Mastine left behind a legacy of love and respect for her family, friends and colleagues. She also left behind a mark of high achievement for all of us to live by and to cherish.
