Queens, NY, July 3, 2012 -- NYS Senators Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Mike Gianaris, NYS Assemblyman Mike Miller, NYC Councilmembers Elizabeth Crowley and Jimmy Van Bramer (via his representative), rallied with members of the Juniper Park Civic Association (led by Bob Holden and Tony Nunziato) and from C.U.R.E.S. (Civics United for Railroad Environmental Solutions) on Monday, July 2, outside the rail-truck transfer facility of Waste Management of NY (WM), 38-22 Review Avenue in Long Island City.
The State Department of Environmental Conservation had recently approved an application to expand WM’s physical plant and operation there, but local residents and elected officials made a strong case that they do not want the extra trash to be transported through their neighborhoods on trucks and trains. They adamantly oppose the NYS DEC’s permit approval and anticipated increase of trucks and trains out of the facility. Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village residents had waged a letter-writing campaign urging WM to find a new route for its waste transportation and previously for a long time, had been working with their elected officials at various levels of government to find ways that will not increase the already poor noise and air quality impacting their homes along the so-called “trash trains” route to and from Fresh Pond Junction.
