Waterloo- I recently honored the late LaVerne Sessler, Sr. for receiving the Waterloo Library and Historical Society's Henry C. Welles Award, presenting the Sessler family with a special New York State Resolution. LaVern Sessler, who passed away in 2005, was a Waterloo native, businessman and civic leader whose tireless commitment to historic preservation was instrumental in restoring a number of Waterloo’s local landmarks. The Henry C. Welles award is named for one of the founders of Memorial Day. Henry C. Welles was a Waterloo resident who conceived and helped to organize the first ever observance of Memorial Day in May of 1866.
