Statement on South Village Historic District Designation Vote

“I am happy to report that today the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to landmark the second phase of the South Village Historic District,” said State Senator Brad Hoylman (D, WFP – Manhattan). “The District is undeniably worthy of this important designation, which will help to protect the area’s largely-intact, historic architectural landscape and preserve its cultural character. For all of their hard work to achieve this designation, I’d like to thank New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Assembly Member Deborah Glick, Manhattan Community Board 2, and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation."

"While we celebrate this hard earned victory today, our fight to preserve the South Village Historic District is far from over. I will continue to urge the LPC to move forward with the designation of the third and final phase of the South Village Historic District as it was originally proposed in 2006. Given the growing threats to the character and integrity of this final portion, it is important that LPC act quickly.”
