New Drivers' Licenses Now Carry VETERANS Status

It has always been my belief that there is no greater debt of honor owed to anyone than that which every American citizen owes to our veterans. We must support our veterans who have returned home and recognize those who were willing to pay the ultimate price for our freedom. That is why I supported and helped to enact new legislation that will allow veterans of the United States Armed Forces to request a special veterans badge be added to their New York State drivers’ license or non-drivers ID.
This law will make it simpler and more convenient for veterans to show and verify their status as veterans without having to carry multiple forms of identification. Additionally, this legislation will ensure that the legacy of our veterans is preserved and reaffirms our commitment to distinguishing those who put their lives on the line for the security of our Nation.
Veterans can apply for the designation when they renew driver's licenses by mail using a renewal notice and a photocopy of proof of honorable discharge. Or they can apply at their local DMV office for a renewal or a replacement document with the veteran status designation.
