Senator Stavisky Meets with Francis Lewis High School Seniors to Discuss Government, Politics and Civic Involvement

Flushing, NY—Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) met with Crystal Ng, Emily Chen and Myung Jin (Jenna) Kim, three students from Francis Lewis High School, to discuss government, politics and civic engagement as part of an assignment for their social studies class.

The high school seniors interviewed the senator about her many years in public service and asked for her opinion on a wide range of issues.

The senator also spoke at length about her priorities for the upcoming legislative session and highlighted issues that failed to pass last year such as the Women’s Equality Agenda and campaign finance and ethics reform.

“Rewriting unfair rules so that everyone is competing on an equal playing field is critically important to our democracy,” said the senator when asked about her legislative goals for next year. “Making sure that our laws say that is illegal for companies to pay a woman a different wage than they pay a man for the same job, that if you breach the public trust as an official you should no longer be entitled to public funds,  making sure that our laws reflect the equality and integrity that our country was built on is very important to me. It’s important to accomplish this now so we can leave that legacy for future generations,” said Senator Stavisky.

The senator also promised the students that she would continue pushing for affordable college tuition as all three young women plan on attending SUNY and CUNY institutions.
