Assistance for Veterans in Westchester Funded by State Grants
Andrea Stewart-Cousins
November 19, 2014
Senator Stewart-Cousins met with Family Services of Westchester to learn more about two programs they provide to veterans in the county with state funding assistance. The first is Vet2Vet, a peer-to-peer network that empowers veterans to handle the challenges associated with their service and returning to civilian life. They have six facilitators working with veterans, and are looking for two more. Veterans are encouraged to apply. The second is the Veterans ServiceWorks AmeriCorps program, the only one of its kind in the state serving veterans.
Here's important information for you:
The ServiceWorks program at FSW engages veterans to strengthen and support services provided by nonprofit organizations in Westchester County. Funded in part by the federal AmeriCorps program, veterans earn both a stipend and an education award while contributing services that organizations may not have the time, staff, or resources to provide. Examples may include serving meals to homebound elderly, mentoring at-risk youth or teaching basic computer classes. It's a win-win for everyone: Veterans are provided additional opportunities to serve communities and learn new skills, while Westchester County non-profits benefit from additional resources, which enable them to carry out their missions.
If you are a Veteran interested in contributing your time and talents by serving "at risk" populations, or if you are interested in joining or leading one of our Vet2Vet peer mentoring and support groups, please contact Jennifer Seager, Program Director at JSeager@fsw.org or 914-872-5242
For nonprofit organizations interested in learning more about how a veteran can help expand or improve services, please contact Jennifer Seager, Program Director at JSeager@fsw.org or 914-872-5242.
