Senator Stewart-Cousins Statement on Veterans Day

On this Veterans Day, we remember them. 

This day began as Armistice Day, when at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, an agreement to end World War I was signed between the Allies and Germany. It has become Veterans Day, when we pause as a nation to recognize all those who have served in our Armed Forces. I'll be joining veterans at several ceremonies today. 

There is a special spot in my heart for all veterans, including my late father, who served in World War II, and my brother, who served in Vietnam. It is my hope that we honor veterans not only today, but everyday, recognizing their service and sacrifice. We owe them a debt of gratitude and more.

New York State has nearly one million veterans. We value their commitment, and we honor them for their service. I'm proud to continue to vote for measures that benefit our veterans because I recognize how important they are, including property tax credits, housing, education and employment opportunities. I've been honored to meet many World War II veterans in my district, many who recently traveled by Honor Flight to visit the memorial in Washington, D.C. I was able to name 99-year-old Bill Moye of New Rochelle to the State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame this year. I've also been inspired by the next generation and 12-year-old Jake Gallin, a 7th grader, who is raising money and awareness about Blue and Gold Star families. We can all do more to respect and honor veterans who fought for our country and our freedom. 

Today we salute our veterans for their bravery. Thank you all for your service.
