Today I joined with a coalition of advocates from the Syracuse Area Domestic & Sexual Violence Coalition's Elder Abuse & Justice Committees to draw attention to the serious issue of elder financial abuse and to invite the community to a special presentation, “Physical & Financial Fitness,” in recognition of the 9th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The presentation, “Physical & Financial Fitness,” will be held Wednesday, June 11 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Syracuse Moose Lodge, 1121 Milton Ave., Syracuse. Featured topics include a community overview of elder abuse, powers of attorney, avoiding scams, and estate planning.
No registration is necessary for this free event.
70th Anniversary of D-Day
Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Allied Army invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, a defining day in world history that marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe and the eventual end of World War II. I want to extend my thanks and gratitude to all veterans for their service to our country.
Funding to Repair Meachem Ice Rink
I was pleased to secure $350,000 in state capital funds to help pay for repairs to the Meachem ice rink in the valley section of Syracuse, which closed earlier this year due to malfunctions in the ice cooling system. I heard first hand from elected officials, parents, hockey league organizers, and skaters just how important the Meachem rink is to those who call it their home ice.
The funding will go to purchase an ice mat, which will form a rink when laid on a concrete floor. The refrigerant runs through the mat chilling when water is put on top of the sheet. The money will also purchase compressors which feed refrigerant through the mat and dehumidifiers for the rink. It is expected the rink will be reopened in time for the beginning of the next hockey season in October.
June is Dairy Month in New York State
Celebrate Dairy Month by enjoying some locally produced cheese, milk, or yogurt, which can be found using the Pride of NY website. Users can search for the best in locally grown and produced products, including dairy products. The website features a map and list showing various search results, which include addresses and contact information of each establishment. There are more than 3,000 members of the “Pride of New York” program listed in this database along with numerous other agribusinesses.
New York’s dairy industry is the state’s leading agricultural sector, accounting for approximately one-half of total agricultural income. It’s also the third leading producer of milk in the country and also the largest producer of yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese in the nation.
Hamilton’s new website focuses on what people who visit, work, or live in the area want to know or find. The site serves as the single point of contact for tourism, economic development, and general information for new residents. Users will find a calendar of events, information on local initiatives, job opportunities, a resource for destination packages, and more.
