Never Forget: Commemorating Patriot Day

September 11, 2014

September 11th, is designated as Patriot Day. Thirteen years ago on this day, terrorists attacked our Country and lives were lost. We cherish the memories of those who are gone and we honor the heroes who helped that day. I encourage people to fly their American flags at half-staff on Sept. 11th, known as Patriot Day, and observe a moment of silence in honor of the 3,000 people who died that day.

Several communities will host ceremonies that pay respect and remember that tragic day in our history. Also, the State Museum has a perpetual exhibit for 9/11 and highlights the rescue efforts after the attacks and the public outpouring of compassion and support. For more information, visit www.nysm.nysed.gov/wtc/  In Saratoga Springs, High Rock Park is home to a sculpture of twisted metal from the World Trade Center towers. For more information on the “Tempered by Memory”  memorial,  visit http://www.saratoga-arts.org/toursevents/911memorial The Waters Edge Lighthouse, in Glenville, also has a memorial which incorporates metal beams from the World Trade Center.

To honor the sacrifices made that day, many people perform acts of kindness and community service. Calling September 11th “National Day of Service and Remembrance, volunteers host food drives, spruce up schools, and honor veterans, soldiers, military families,  http://www.serve.gov/?q=site-page/september-11th-national-day-service-and-remembrance
