Geri Spino
Award: HONORING WOMEN IN NEW YORK
Year: 2014
Geri Spino is a proud native of Rochester. Tragically, in 2004, her son Scott was struck and killed by a repeat drunk driving offender. Scott’s passing was a monumental loss for the entire Spino family. Since her retirement from Excellus Blue Cross and Blue Shield five years ago, Ms. Spino has dedicated her time to serving as President of the Scott Spino Foundation, which was established in loving memory of her son, Scott, and is focused on supporting programs that provide education, coaching and mentoring to children within the community. It is through this support that the foundation’s board of directors, members and volunteers contribute to the goal of investing in today’s youth and enhancing tomorrow’s future.
The Scott Spino Foundation has invested $300,000 in the Rochester community and continues to make a lasting impact. Some of the Foundation’s accomplishments include: awarding 25 scholarships and donating more than 12,500 new coats and 14,000 new hats to 12 schools around the Rochester area. In addition, the Scott Spino Literacy Program has given away more than 22,000 new books to children.
Ms. Spino has been a guest speaker at various events, where her presentations focus on drinking and driving and making good life choices. She is the proud recipient of the SAANYS (School Administration Association of New York State) Friend of Education. She has also been awarded the Greece Community Service Award for her positive and enriching influence on the lives of children in the community.
As President of the Scott Spino Foundation and dedicated volunteer at the Villa of Hope and the Angels of Mercy, Ms. Spino also continues to make a diff erence in the lives of hundreds of children.
Ms. Spino has been married to her husband, Jerry, for 40 years. They have two beautiful children together – their son, Scott, and daughter, Kristen. They are also the proud grandparents of Alyssa and Madison.
One of Ms. Spino’s most treasured sentiments is refl ected in all that she gives of herself: “There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others” – Mandy Hale
