Albany, NY—During the budget debates, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) underscored the importance of campaign finance reform and criticized the absence of true reform from the budget that was signed by Governor Cuomo this morning.
“The role of money in campaigns is a persistent problem in this legislature,” said Senator Stavisky on the Senate floor. “The proposal that is currently in the budget is a half-hearted, watered down proposal.”
The 2014 budget only provides for public financing in the upcoming state comptroller’s race. The current proposal is a poorly disguised stalling tactic that puts New Yorkers at least another year from fair, equitable, publicly financed elections that put issues before special interests.
