Senator Stavisky Inducts Coalition for Queens Founder Jukay Hsu to the NYS Senate Veterans Hall of Fame

Flushing, NY—Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) today inducted Flushing native, Army combat veteran and Coalition for Queens founder Jukay Hsu into the 2014 New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

Hsu, who joined the Army following his graduation from Harvard College, commanded a rifle platoon in Iraq’s Sunni Triangle, where he conducted patrols and raids. He also led economic development and governance initiatives for two Iraqi districts, which culminated in the founding of the first private provincial radio station with Iraqi reporters. Hsu was awarded the Combat Infantrymans Badge and the Bronze Star, the fourth-highest individual military award, for his service.

“I am proud to honor Jukay Hsu today, not only as a decorated veteran, but also as a public servant who has dedicated most of his life to serving his community and his country,” said Senator Stavisky. “During his deployment in Iraq, Captain Hsu distinguished himself by his talent for community-building, which helped him collaborate with local journalists to establish the first private provincial Iraqi radio station. Since returning home, Jukay has used that same gift to coordinate Hurricane Sandy relief, to serve as the youngest member of Mayor de Blasio’s transition team and to found Coalition for Queens, a nonprofit that is cultivating Queens’ diversity  into a hub for technology and innovation. Jukay is an exemplary public servant and on behalf of all New Yorkers I thank him for his military service and his continued civilian service.”

An immigrant from Taiwan raised in Flushing, Hsu attended Stuyvesant High School where he served as student body president. After returning home from his military service in 2011, Hsu founded Coalition for Queens (C4Q), a community development organization focused on building a technology and innovation hub in Queens through education in technology and entrepreneurship.

The New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life. There are currently over 885,000 veterans living in New York State.
