Cabrini Immigrant Services Honoring Senator Stewart-Cousins with Liberty & Justice Award
November 30, 2015
(Dobbs Ferry - November 19th) Senator Stewart-Cousins was honored by Cabrini Immigrant Services with a Liberty and Justice Award at their annual gala on November 12th. She received the honor for her long, consistent and successful advocacy for human and civil rights and for supporting Cabrini's programs and services that assist immigrants. Cabrini Immigrant Services provides clients with the means to facilitate the challenges of life in a new country - instruction in English, immigration issues and access to healthcare, education and employment - and everyday concerns that can be overwhelming for those new to this country without adequate resources.
In remarks during her acceptance speech, Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke of the recent controversy surrounding acceptance of Syrian refugees into the United States. "We as a state, a country and a society must not allow fear to destroy what is great about our country. America is more than just a nation. We are an idea and an ideal that must be a beacon of freedom for the rest of the world. We must obviously protect our people with proper screenings but also protect our values by not turning our back on those in need."
Last year, Senator Stewart-Cousins voted for and helped pass legislation that established New York State's Office for New Americans (NYSONA), another important resource for new New Yorkers. It assists new Americans with becoming full participants in our state's civic and economic life. To learn more about either program please contact the District Office at (914) 423-4031
