(Albany - June 1st) Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins addressed a roundtable of young women at the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society New Leadership Luncheon. The Senator, joined by Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, discussed women involvement in government and politics. Currently, women make up less than 25% of the New York State legislative body. As the first African-American woman to lead a conference, and as one of the leading supporters of women involvement in government, the Senator enjoyed her time speaking the to future female leaders, that it was up to the younger generation to improve the statistics. The Senator recalled her past as Director of Community Affairs in the City of Yonkers, her many years of work in the private sector, and her decision to run for office herself. She stressed self-competence in the male dominated workplace stating, “You don’t have to know everything, but you have to know yourself."
