On this day in 1776, America first asserted her independence from Great Britain with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As it states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This document established firm ideals and guiding principles, and an independent government in our nation.
In the decades and centuries that followed, some of our ancestors made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for our freedom. The fight for freedom continues today, and we owe a debt of gratitude to our veterans and those currently serving in the military. We thank them for their service and willingness to protect our freedom, first announced 239 years ago today.
