The federal government has allowed a special enrollment period for New Yorkers that paid a tax penalty last year for not having health insurance and still lack coverage this year, or have had a qualifying life event such as marriage, becoming a citizen or loss of job. Those eligible have until April 30th by 11:59PM to enroll in one of the private health plans offered through the New York State of Health website. Those who don’t qualify will have to wait until November 1st when the open-enrollment period for coverage in 2016 begins. The federal tax penalty for individuals who fail to have health insurance coverage will face a $325 fee per adult or two percent of their income, whichever is the higher. Those who qualify for Medicaid can enroll at any point. Visit the New York State of Health website or call (855) 355-5777 for additional information or assistance regarding enrollment.
