Statement From Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
Andrea Stewart-Cousins
July 26, 2015
"The 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is an important milestone that should be celebrated. This historic legislation advances equal access for anyone who is disabled and prohibits discrimination against them based on that disability.
"Since the law was passed, we have seen significant progress and accommodation made but the reality is, there is much more to do for truly equal access. For instance, in many cases, a wheelchair ramp to a building or apartment exists but the kitchen sink may still be at a standard height.
"This federal law does provide the framework for those with physical challenges to pursue lives and careers that before were unthinkable. Yet, we must continue to be vigilant, removing barriers and empowering people of all abilities to be able to pursue full lives, as this law intended."
