Squadron, Lavine Introduce Legislation To Rename New York’s Donald J. Trump State Park
December 17, 2015
NEW YORK STATE – Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblymember Charles D. Lavine announced the “Anything But Trump Act” (S6298). The legislation calls for New York State to rename Donald J. Trump State Park. Lavine and Squadron also reiterated calls that the State remove any signage or public State Parks material associated with the park in response to his increasingly discriminatory proposals.
The legislators noted that Mr. Trump’s rhetoric and proposals have become hostile to core values of New York and the nation. Assemblymember Lavine has called for the park to be renamed after Muslim Revolutionary War Veteran Peter Salem, who was influential in battles that occurred in New York. Squadron has called for a public renaming process that engages the local community.
“The rhetoric and discriminatory proposals we’ve seen from Mr. Trump don’t belong in the presidential election, and don’t belong in New York State Parks,” said New York State Senator Daniel Squadron. “He has dishonored the state, and should not be honored with a state park named for him. I look forward to working with Assemblymember Lavine on this issue.”
“It is time the State of New York sends a message to Donald Trump that his hate speech is not welcome in our great state,” said New York Assemblymember Charles D. Lavine. “I am confident that the Governor will take our letters into consideration. If he is unable to act, then we are prepared to move forward with this legislation.”
Lavine and Squadron have both written to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo calling for the park to be renamed, and signage and associated materials to be removed. Mr. Trump donated the land to New York State in 2006, after failing to secure the rights to develop it into a golf course. The park was never completed, and closed completely in 2010 due to a lack of funding. Signage for the park persists.
