We must uphold justice by calling out injustice, by peacefully protesting against the deaths of our fellow Americans, by reforming the systems that have let us down and left families grieving for their sons, husbands, and children. We cannot uphold justice by perpetrating injustice upon our neighbors, our friends, and our communities. President Obama has already provided useful guidance. Our President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing reported in March on concrete recommendations that ought to guide our deliberations.
These problems – of policing, of unequal opportunities, of injustice – these problems will be overcome by the grit and determination of our communities. Grit and determination that was on Edmund Pettus Bridge that Bloody Sunday in Selma 50 years ago. Grit and determination that never gave in to despair. Grit and determination that could sing – sing! – ‘We shall overcome’ in the face of hatred. With my colleagues, working with all New Yorkers, we will demonstrate that self-same grit and determination and uphold justice. To that end, along with elected and community leaders in Brooklyn, I am hosting an All Live Matter, Criminal Justice Reform Town Hall on May 4th. Together, we shall overcome.
