Public Hearings on Brooklyn’s Struggling Schools

The state Department of Education has placed five “struggling“ city schools within Senate District 18 into superintendent receivership. Under state law, the schools have two years to make demonstrable improvements in student performance. Public hearings will be held to discuss the performance of the schools, the process of receivership, and to solicit input through public engagement regarding recommendations for improving the schools.
The five schools and the date, time and location of their respective hearings are listed below.
- J.H.S. 291 Roland Hayes (32K291). Monday, September 21, 6 – 9 p.m. 231 Palmetto St., Brooklyn, NY, 11221
- Cypress Hills Collegiate Preparatory School (19K659). Friday, September 25, 6 – 9 p.m., 999 Jamaica Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11208.
- Aspirations Diploma Plus High School (23K646). Friday, September 25, 6 – 9 p.m., 1495 Herkimer St., Brooklyn, NY 11233.
- Foundations Academy (14K32). Monday, September 28, 6 – 9 p.m., 70 Tompkins Ave., Brooklyn, NY, 11206.
- Bushwick Leaders High School for Academic Excellence (32K556). Monday, September 28, 6 – 9 p.m., 797 Bushwick Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11221.
Public comment at the hearings is welcomed. Speakers must register between 5:30 and 6:15 p.m. on the date of the hearing at the hearing location. Written comments will be collected on the day of the hearing.
