Albany, N.Y., April 28—Cornell University President-elect Elizabeth Garrett visited the state capital today to meet with Senate and Assembly leaders as an introduction to her upcoming tenure, to help celebrate the occasion of Cornell’s 150th anniversary, and to discuss the university’s future and how its mission intersects with New York State’s overall economic and educational goals.

"I appreciated this opportunity to meet with President-elect Garrett in anticipation of her upcoming tenure.  Cornell University has long played a crucial role in developing, guiding and leading so many of New York State’s economic and educational achievements, and we all look forward to fostering an even stronger partnership moving forward, “ said Senator Tom O’Mara (R-Big Flats), whose 58th Senatorial District includes Cornell.

Garrett will assume the presidency when current President David Skorton steps down at the end of June to become the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

O’Mara recently sponsored a Senate Resolution (S.R.1228), which was unanimously approved by the Senate on March 31st, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Cornell’s founding.

The Senate Resolution reads, in part, “The alumni of Cornell University, today numbering over 235,000 worldwide and 63,000 in New York State, have  tremendous impact on society and  individual lives, in accordance with the University's mission.”
