Today, Senator Squadron released the following letter to Governor Cuomo calling for a Battery Park City Board that reflects a local role:
Dear Governor Cuomo,
We write regarding the composition of the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) board. When Battery Park City was created 40 years ago, it was a development project. Today, it is a thriving community full of families and businesses. But its governance is unchanged and does not reflect a local role.
Currently, the seven member board has two vacancies, two members with expired terms, and two members whose terms will expire by the end of 2016. As each vacancy arises, we strongly urge you to make appointments to the board that ensure community members compose a majority of the board’s membership.
The board makes many decisions that impact daily life in the community. Community members will provide a community perspective that is too often not sufficiently represented. The current and future vacancies provide an opportunity to ensure a local voice in BPCA decision making.
Battery Park City is now a thriving community whose members should be given the opportunity to contribute to its governance. Please feel free to contact Senator Squadron at 212-298-5565 with any questions.
Sincerely,
Daniel Squadron, State Senator
Jerrold Nadler, Congressmember
Gale A. Brewer, Manhattan Borough President
Margaret Chin, City Councilmember
