Summer in the District
August 10, 2016
Dear Friend,
I hope you’re doing well and enjoying the summer -- here are some tips on staying cool in the heat.
I also wanted to share some of the issues I’ve been working on:
- You may have heard that the MTA has planned extensive repairs on the L train starting in 2019. I organized over 30 elected officials to urge creation of an interagency working group to find ways to mitigate the closure’s impact on riders and businesses. I’ve also continued to fight proposed cuts to local F service, along with colleagues. And, I joined Riders Alliance and the Bus Turnaround Campaign to support bold new bus planning.
- Our nation’s Constitution guarantees the right to a speedy trial. Unfortunately, many New Yorkers are effectively denied this right by unacceptable court delays. I’m continuing to push for Kalief’s Law, to fix the state’s broken speedy trial law, and I spoke out against policies that leave New Yorkers in jail while waiting for arraignment.
- I was proud to support “The Hills” on Governors Island -- now open. Come visit Slide Hill -- the longest slide in the city!
And there are important issues in neighborhoods across the district as well:
- I’m continuing to urge that Bushwick Inlet Park move forward immediately, whatever it takes.
- I called on the Battery Park City Authority Board to allow members of the public to provide direct public comment at the Authority’s board meetings, which the Board has denied.
- When Squibb Bridge in Brooklyn Bridge Park was closed for repairs over two years ago, I stood with residents to urge a quick reopening, ensuring safety and transparency. Finally, plans for a 2017 reopening are underway. I’m also working with Love Our Pool to push to keep the current Brooklyn Bridge Park pool as we push for a permanent one. Join the effort, here.
- I worked with DOT and the Hester Street Collaborative to bring public art to South Street, and saved seasonal use and activities at Pier 42, working with EDC, Parks, CB3, and Paths to Pier 42.
- I continue to oppose the development proposals in the Two Bridges neighborhood and am calling for real public engagement.
Please let my office know if we can be of assistance at 212-298-5565, 718-875-1517 or squadron@nysenate.gov.
Best,
